TAIPEI, Taiwan, July 28 (UPI) -- The Asian typhoon Fung-wong reached mainland China Monday night after leaving at least two people dead and six more injured on Taiwan, authorities said.
Fung Wong, which is Cantonese for "Phoenix," carried winds of 74 mph when the storm's eye reached Donghan Town in Fuqing City at 10 p.m., Xinhua reported. It is the eighth tropical storm to hit China's coast this year, the state-run news agency noted.
Fujian province, where more than 338,000 people had been evacuated ahead of the storm, had received about 8 inches of rain in the hours before the typhoon made landfall and, after a quiet spell as the storm's eye passed over, was expected to receive that much more by Wednesday.
In Taiwan, the storm caused street flooding, knocked out power to tens of thousands of homes, halted rail and air service, and forced the closure of the island's stock market, schools and offices, The Independent reported online.
The fatalities in Taiwan included a 69-year-old man who died when winds blew him off the roof of a shed as he tried to repair it, The China Post reported. The second victim was a 55-year-old woman who drowned after falling into an irrigation ditch with her motorbike, the newspaper said.
President Ma Ying-jeou urged residents to be careful because of the threat of floods and mudslides.
The storm claimed five lives when it passed over the Philippines during the weekend.
