Chicago police collect 6,000 guns

CHICAGO, July 27 (UPI) -- Law enforcement authorities say people turned in about 6,000 firearms this weekend as part of Chicago's gun recovery program.

At least 11,000 illegal firearms have been handed over in the past two years, officials said of the program, which began four years ago.

Mayor Richard Daley's office said 6,700 firearms were turned in last year. Police Supt. Jody Weis said officials were aiming to get two times as many guns this year.

People showed up at 25 drop-off points to hand over firearms Saturday, the Chicago Tribune reported.

The newspaper said people who take part in the program are given a $100 prepaid debit card for each real gun they turn in and $10 for replica guns, BB guns, air guns.
