U.N. court deadline set in executions case

THE HAGUE, Netherlands, July 22 (UPI) -- The World Court Tuesday gave the United States until Aug. 29 to respond to Mexico's claim that five Mexican nationals shouldn't be on death row in U.S. prisons.

Mexico alleges the United States violated international agreements between the two countries when the five men were not allowed Mexican consular services following their arrests, the United Nations said in a news release. The United Nation's International Court of Justice, known as the World Court, ordered the United States last week to delay the executions until it issues a final ruling.

The United States does not accept the universal jurisdiction of the court, but does accept decisions on a case by case basis.

One of the five defendants, Jose Ernesto Medellin Rojas, is set to be executed in Texas Aug. 5. The four others -- Cesar Roberto Fierro Reyna, Ruben Ramirez Cardenas, Humberto Leal Garcia and Roberto Moreno Ramos -- could soon receive execution dates.

The five are among 51 nationals Mexico claims were denied their rights.
