ST. LOUIS, July 16 (UPI) -- Authorities were questioning a truck driver Wednesday following an 11-vehicle pileup near St. Louis that killed two people and injured 16 others.
The accident occurred Tuesday afternoon when a tractor-trailer barreled into a lane of stop-and-go traffic on eastbound Highway 40 just west of Interstate 270, The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
The truck driver, Jeffrey R. Knight, 49, of Muscle Shoals, Ala., was not injured in the accident.
The Missouri Highway Patrol identified the dead as Charles J. Cason, 55, of Caseyville, Ill. and Lydia Miller, 55, of Canton, Mo.
Three people injured in the crashes were listed in critical condition Wednesday.
