Suspect killed, cops wounded in shootout

ATLANTA, July 15 (UPI) -- Two Atlanta police officers on an anti-burglary patrol shot and killed a man who fired at them Tuesday morning, wounding both, police said.

One officer was hit in the face and the other in the chest, where his bullet-proof vest saved him, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.

Police Chief Richard Pennington said the officers tried to question two men and a woman they spotted hanging out outside a house on Cascade Road. One man allegedly pulled out an automatic weapon and opened fire.

The other man and the woman were arrested.

Cascade Road, a busy strip that runs into downtown Atlanta, has been the site of two recent violent crimes. On Sunday, a man shot and killed a convenience store clerk during an argument. On July 2, a gunman wounded two customers in a Starbucks, one of them former Atlanta City Attorney Clifford Hardwick.
