NEW YORK, July 15 (UPI) -- Gas station owners in New York say they are running short on 4s now that pump prices are hovering around $4.40 per gallon.

Some station operators in the city told The New York Times that they are considering ordering more 5s for their signage just in case prices head toward $5 per gallon.

Some stations have had to improvise and make their own "4" signs, which city officials say is legal.

"People are running out of 4s and 5s, so we're allowing them to post makeshift numbers as long as they are the right size," John Browne, the assistant director of enforcement for the city's Department of Consumer Affairs' petroleum unit, told the Times.
