CHICAGO, July 12 (UPI) -- An Illinois judge sentenced a man to 20 years in prison for assaulting former U.S. Sen. Carol Moseley Braun while attempting to rob her, officials said.

Cook County Criminal Court Judge Michael Toomin sentenced Joseph Dixon, 39, to 20 years behind bars Friday for the attempted armed robbery of Braun and an additional five years for aggravated battery, the Chicago Tribune reported.

State's attorney's office spokeswoman Tandra Simonton said Dixon is to serve the sentences at the same time.

The Illinois Democrat said in court last month she recognized Dixon as the person who assaulted her April 27, 2007, outside her Chicago home, the newspaper said.

She said Dixon threatened her with a knife and tried to take her purse.
