Police search site where kids were abused

LONDON, July 9 (UPI) -- British police searched an old Nazi wartime bunker on the island of Jersey Wednesday as part of a massive sexual abuse inquiry that may involve murder.

Nearly 100 people who were cared for at a nearby children's home have told authorities that they were sexually abused in the underground bunker during the 1970s and 1980s, The Times of London reported Wednesday.

"The allegation is that residents from Haut de la Garenne were taken to the bunker by members of the staff and abused there," said Lenny Harper who is heading the investigation.

Four underground chambers, which some of the victims called punishment rooms, have been uncovered. Police have found shackles and a large bloodstained concrete bath. They have also recovered at least 30 charred human bone fragments.

Police have charged three people with offenses relating to the abuse of children.

Haut de la Garenne, which closed as a children's home in 1986, is currently a youth hostel.
