Sex offender registation guides in place

WASHINGTON, July 1 (UPI) -- Final guidelines for sex offender registration and notification are in place, the U.S. Justice Department said Tuesday.

The guidelines provide tools for states, the District of Columbia, territories and some recognized Indian tribes to incorporate the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act's minimum requirements into their sex offender registration and notification programs, the department said in a release.

"The department is pleased to provide guidance to states and other covered jurisdictions in complying with the Adam Walsh Child Safety and Protection Act," said Acting Assistant Attorney General Jeffrey Sedgwick. "These guidelines will provide valuable implementation strategies to enhance their abilities to respond to crimes against children and adults, and prevent sex offenders who have been released back into the community from victimizing others."

The guidelines provide principles for jurisdictions to follow when implementing SORNA and offer clarification on topics such as treatment of juveniles, retroactivity, tribal issues, information posted on Web sites and the length of registration, the Justice Department said.
