HAMPTON ROADS, Va., June 29 (UPI) -- The wildfire burning for three weeks near Hampton Roads, Va., was 90 percent under control, officials say.
No one had been injured fighting the fire at Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge until Friday, the (Newport News, Va.) Daily Press reported Sunday. Florida firefighter Richard Taylor had a tree topple on him, leaving him with two broken bones in his shoulder, and numerous cuts and bruises.
The fire had consumed 4,034 acres by Saturday evening. There are 160 crew members battling the blaze.
Taylor was injured while he and others were responding Friday to a quarter-acre fire that had jumped a fire line. When battling the flames, a tree fell on Taylor, whose head was protected by a helmet.
Taylor was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Trauma Center, where he was treated and released that night. He was expected to return to Crawfordville, Fla., to be with his family, the newspaper reported.
