Official shifts gears on vanity car plates

OSLO, Norway, June 28 (UPI) -- Norway's transportation minister has shifted gears on her decision to block a plan to allow personalized license plates in the Scandinavian country.

Transport Minister Liv Signe Navarsete had halted a project that would have allowed motorists in Norway to purchase personalized license plates as a way to generate funding for road projects, Aftenposten reported Saturday.

Personalized plates "are a bit vain and un-Norwegian," she said.

Navarsete said she didn't, "in principle," oppose allowing motorists to buy special plates, and even thinks they can be a "good idea" if they'll raise money for traffic safety.

Her new comments come after Navarsete was summoned by the opposition parties in Parliament to explain why she earlier did not want drivers in Norway to have the option of buying special plates.

"We'll now clarify for the highway department anything that's not clear," she was quoted as saying.
