20 suspects arrested in Russian mafia bust

MADRID, June 14 (UPI) -- Twenty suspected Russian organized crime figures were imprisoned in Spain Saturday after being arrested on money laundering charges.

Spanish authorities allege the suspects are members of the Tambov Russian mafia crime family and involved in laundering the proceeds of organized crime, RIA Novosti reported, adding the arrests were made Friday in Madrid and Barcelona, as well as in Malaga, Valencia and the Balearic Islands.

The Russian news agency said 400 law enforcement officers executed a raid that netted 23 luxury cars, more than $307,000 in cash, a yacht, various weapons and some artwork.

Spanish police also have frozen $18 million in bank accounts, RIA Novosti said.
