Russia may resume Afghan arms shipments

MOSCOW, June 9 (UPI) -- A top Russian official said Monday the country may resume shipping Russian arms to Afghanistan after the shipments ceased in 2005.

Andrei Denisov, Russia's first deputy foreign minister, said Afghan leaders have recently asked Russian officials to resume the aid programs, RIA Novosti reported Monday.

"We are working out parameters for resuming bilateral cooperation in this field with our Afghan colleagues, and we expect Afghanistan's defense minister to visit Moscow," Denisov said.

He said Russia has already given $220 million worth of military technical aid to Afghanistan.
