NEW ORLEANS, June 9 (UPI) -- Many New Orleans residents said they are annoyed with a lack of post office mailboxes in the city since Hurricane Katrina ruined many of them three years ago.
The mailbox shortage has prompted many residents to complain to workers at local post offices, who say they welcome the gripes as constructive criticism, the Times-Picayune in New Orleans reported Monday.
"When I drive around, I don't see mailboxes anywhere. I can't tell you where one is. It looks like they went the way of the phone booth," resident Deena Hanson, 53, said.
Postal Service officials say they are still working to get back to normal after the storm and plan to open several new facilities before the year is over.
Postal spokeswoman Daisy Comeaux said the service plans to install boxes where residents need them, as long as at least 50 pieces of mail are collected from them daily.
