James Young, Kennedy's doctor, dies

LEE, N.H., June 9 (UPI) -- Friends, family and politicians were paying respects Monday to James Morningstar Young, a former White House physician who died last week at age 78.

Young, a retired Navy captain, was the physician to Presidents Kennedy and Carter. He died June 4 from complications following a stroke he suffered in May, the Boston Globe reported.

Young, a Lee, N.H., resident, was born in rural Ohio and rose to become captain of the Duke University football team. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1955 and 1975, and was serving as the ship's doctor for the USS Northampton when he first met President Kennedy, who was touring the ship. A few months later, he was asked to become the president's personal physician, the Globe said, adding that he was present at Kennedy's autopsy.

"He was with Mrs. Kennedy for 10 days after the funeral," Mariette (Aubuchon) Young, his wife of 37 years, told the newspaper, but never shared any details about the days at the Kennedy family's Massachusetts compound following the president's assassination.

In addition to his wife, Young is survived by a brother, six daughters and two sons.
