BUENOS AIRES, June 5 (UPI) -- An oil spill off the coast of Argentina is threatening to reach the shore near Buenos Aires, officials said Thursday.

The spill -- which has grown to cover a length of 12 miles -- occurred when Greek and Maltese ships collided in the waters separating Argentina and its South American neighbor, Uruguay, La Nacion reported Thursday.

Though no one was injured, the spill from the tanks of the Greek ship is said to be encroaching on the shore of Argentina despite efforts by workers to keep the oil from reaching land.
