Principal resigning because of gay club

IRMO, S.C., May 21 (UPI) -- A South Carolina high school principal says he will work one more year and then quit because he must allow a Gay-Straight Alliance club on campus.

Irmo High School Principal Eddie Walker said his resignation is set to begin at the close of the school year in June 2009, WIS-TV in Columbia, SC reported Wednesday.

"The formation of this club conflicts with my professional beliefs in that we do not have other clubs at Irmo High school based on sexual orientation, sexual preference, or sexual activity," Walker said in a letter to the school.

Walker said in his letter that he was "sure the district would have been sued," and probably would have lost if it chose not to permit the club.

"I would ask that you respect my choice as I respect your choice to disagree with me on this issue. I bear no malice towards anyone involved," Walker said.

The school has not said when it will start looking for a new principal for next year.
