U.S. parks and neighborhoods endangered

WASHINGTON, May 20 (UPI) -- California's state park system and Manhattan's Lower East Side are among endangered U.S. historic sites, a National Trust for Historic Preservation list shows.

The National Trust for Historic Preservation on Tuesday unveiled its 2008 list of the 11 most endangered historic places. The 21st annual list singles out some of the nation's architectural, cultural and national heritage sites that face destruction.

The list included California's state park system, which faces $1.2 billion in postponed refurbishments due to budget cuts. The Great Falls in Montana, part of the historic Lewis and Clark Trail, faces environmental damage from the construction of a massive coal fired plant nearby, the group said.

The buildings along Chicago's historic Michigan Avenue and the Boyd Theater in Philadelphia also are near the top of the list.

"These places tell remarkable stories about exploration, immigration, Civil Rights, civic pride and cultural achievement, and our nation cannot afford to lose them along with the stories they tell," said National Trust President Richard Moe.
