Officer fired for keeping parking tickets

CHICAGO, May 14 (UPI) -- A Chicago police officer has been fired for writing up hundreds of parking tickets that he never gave to offending motorists.

Officer Sal Mungia, 35, told a Police Board hearing that he kept the parking tickets after motorists drove away or were verbally abusive to him, The Chicago Tribune reported Wednesday.

By keeping and possibly destroying tickets, Mungia may have left hundreds of people unaware that they were issued citations, said Anna D'Ascenzo, assistant corporation counsel.

Some 291 parking tickets were discovered when Mungia and his family were evicted from their South Side home last year as part of a mortgage foreclosure.

Mungia, who had been with the department since 2000, was stripped of his police powers and recommended for firing by the board.

Police spokeswoman Monique Bond says some of the parking tickets Mungia issued have been dropped, others were paid and some are still under review.
