Rep. Fossella admits adulterous affair

WASHINGTON, May 8 (UPI) -- U.S. Rep. Vito Fossella, R-N.Y., admitted Thursday that the woman who posted bail for him after his DUI arrest, who is not his wife, is the mother of his child.

Fossella released a statement apologizing for his conduct, the New York Post reported. He said he had been having an affair with Laura Fay and that he is the father of her 3-year-old daughter.

"While I understand that there will be many questions, including those about my political future, making any political decisions right now are furthest from my mind," the lawmaker, who was arrested for drunk driving last week, said. "Over the coming weeks and months, I will to continue to do my job and I will work hard to heal the deep wounds I have caused."

Fay was formerly an officer in the Air Force and served as a congressional liaison. Fossella -- who had been seen drunk in a Washington bar a few hours before his arrest -- may have been on his way to Fay's house when he was arrested in Virginia, the newspaper said.

Minority Leader John Boehner of Ohio told The Hill that Fossella must decide whether to remain in Congress. Boehner said he expected a days in a matter of days, not weeks, the New York Post reported Thursday.

Fosella and his wife, Mary Pat, have three children.
