Dalai Lama envoys reach China

DHARAMSALA, India, May 3 (UPI) -- The Dalai Lama's envoys have arrived in China for talks with representatives of that country's leadership, a Tibetan spokesman said Saturday in India.

The spiritual leader's secretary, Tenzin Takhla, told CNN from Dharamsala, India, the meetings would be short and there would be no comment until the envoys return.

CNN said the meetings would be the first since pro-independence protests erupted in the Tibetan capital on March 14. China says the protests have devolved into violence and looting.

The report said the location of the meetings has not been made public, though other reports said they would begin Saturday.

The envoys "will convey His Holiness the Dalai Lama's deep concerns about the Chinese authorities' handling of the situation and also provide suggestions to bring peace to the region," Takhla told CNN.
