BEIJING, May 1 (UPI) -- As China prepared to meet the Dalai Lama's envoy, the Communist party mouthpiece People's Daily attacked the Tibetan leader's human rights stand.
In a commentary written by He Zhenhua, the newspaper said the Dalai Lama has not right to talk about human rights, Xinhua reported.
He said Tibet under the rule of "the Dalai clique," practiced slavery by dividing Tibetans into different classes.
The report claimed the slave owners, who accounted for only 5 percent of the population, subjected their people to economic exploitation, political oppression and spiritual control.
Xinhua quoted the commentary as saying even now, Tibetan exiles in India's Dharamshala enjoy no human rights. The Dalai Lama escaped to India in 1959 after a failed rebellion against Chinese rule of Tibet and Dharamshala functions as the Tibetan government-in-exile.
Last week, China, bowing to international pressure to stop its crackdown in Tibet, agreed to have its relevant government department meet with the Tibetan leader's representative. No date has been fixed.
China has accused the Dalai Lama of masterminding the Tibetan unrest since March and insisted the Tibetan leader must accept that Tibet and Taiwan are parts of China before any talks can be held.
