Massive meth lab found near Toronto

MISSISSAUGA, Ontario, April 30 (UPI) -- Toronto police and their neighboring counterparts raided an industrial area and discovered the city's largest ever methamphetamines lab.

After a joint investigation with Peel Regional Police in adjacent Mississauga, officers stormed the unit Tuesday and said they were taken aback by the size of the operation, Toronto Police Staff-Inspector Don Campbell told the Toronto Sun.

Because of the large amount of chemicals inside, police retreated and the fire department's hazardous materials team was summoned. Federal Health Canada chemists were also called as traffic in the area was rerouted. Campbell said the risk of explosion and fire was very high and it could be days before the area was declared safe.

"It's one big unit, and I understand there's two different kitchens inside, two different cooking areas," Campbell said. "It is my understanding it's the largest meth lab the (Greater Toronto Area) has seen."

Two men were arrested and Campbell said the investigation was continuing to determine where the drugs were being shipped and sold.
