More text messages released in Detroit

DETROIT, Minn., April 29 (UPI) -- A judge ordered the release Tuesday of steamy text messages between Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick and his former chief of staff.

The messages were included in a motion prepared by an attorney for former Police Chief Gary Brown. The motion was never filed, but Wayne County Judge Robert Colombo ordered it made public because of its role in a $8.4 million settlement against the city, The Detroit News reported.

The Detroit Free Press printed many text messages between Kilpatrick and Christine Beatty weeks ago, igniting a scandal that led to their indictment on perjury charges. The messages apparently showed they lied under oath about their affair and their role in police firings.

The newspaper said it obtained some of the messages released Tuesday but decided not to print them because of their nature and because releasing them might cause needless pain to innocent parties.

In one exchange, Beatty and Kilpatrick refer to a councilwoman by a sexual epithet. There is also a text message from Beatty's husband.
