Arrest made in serial car vandalism

VANCOUVER, British Columbia, April 23 (UPI) -- Police in Vancouver, Canada, have arrested a man they suspect scratched as many as 1,000 cars and caused $500,000 in damages since March.

Officers arrested Soo Yo Kim, 31, early Monday after they allegedly saw him drag keys along several cars, The Province newspaper in Vancouver reported Wednesday.

Constable Tim Fanning said Kim was charged with two counts of mischief from that night, although another 100 cars in the area were scratched around the same time.

He said investigators suspect Kim had a hand in 1,000 other incidents in the city as well as sprees in Coquitlam and Burnaby.

A spokeswoman for the provincial insurance corporation that insures all drivers said it's believed Kim has a grudge against the corporation related to a friend's experience with premiums or a claim five years ago, The Province said

Spokeswoman Kathy Taylor told the newspaper the damages in the three cities range from $200 per vehicle to thousands of dollars. Owners must pay a $300 deductible under the system.

Kim was previously convicted in Port Coquitlam Provincial Court of two counts of mischief and put on probation for scratching cars with keys in 2004, the newspaper said.
