Report: Police ignored 6,000 pot smokers

VANCOUVER, British Columbia, April 22 (UPI) -- A Vancouver, Canada, city councilor wants to know why police made no arrests at a weekend rally where thousands of people were smoking marijuana.

Sunday's event was part of a worldwide movement calling for the legalization of marijuana known as the "4/20" rally, with the number representing the time of day smokers claim is the best to start puffing, The Province newspaper in Vancouver said.

Councilor Kim Capri told the newspaper she sees a gross inconsistency in city law enforcement for the event attended by more than 6,000 people.

"If a couple want to have a picnic in the park and have a glass of wine with their chicken salad, police will come along and pour the wine out," she said. "And yet we have people smoking pot en masse in public."

In response, Vancouver police Constable Tim Fanning said it was more a matter of logistics than inconsistent policing.

"I don't think anybody in this city would think it would be reasonable to go in and arrest 6,000 to 12,000 people who are smoking pot," he told the Province.
