Chicago cops lied on DUI busts, suit says

CHICAGO, April 16 (UPI) -- Three Chicago policemen, one receiving recognition for his number of drunk-driving arrests, face misconduct and perjury charges, an indictment says.

John Haleas, honored for arresting the most drunk drivers in Illinois, faces charges of felonious misconduct, obstruction of justice and perjury. Two other officers, Michael Bernichio and Daniel Murphy, are charged with misconduct and other crimes, The Chicago Sun-Times said Wednesday.

The Cook County state's attorney's office in October dropped around 50 drunk-driving cases credited to Haleas and considered an additional 500 others for dismissal.

The indictment says Haleas made several arrests without conducting roadside sobriety tests.

Noe Martinez said in a federal lawsuit that Haleas arrested him for drunken driving before he even started his car.

The counsel for Haleas, Robert Kuzas, said his client was "looking forward to vindicating himself" when he appears in court April 25.
