Ayatollah calls for nuclear negotiations

TEHRAN, April 11 (UPI) -- Iran's prayer leader told thousands of worshipers at Tehran University Friday Iran is ready for nuclear negotiations.

Ayatollah Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani said that even though the International Atomic Energy Agency has emphasized that Iran has not deviated from peaceful nuclear activities, "the oppressor powers have still not ended creating troubles for us," the IRNA news agency reported.

He said with all nuclear matters "completely legal" and related commitments signed and abided by, "I think the best thing to do for both sides is to negotiate."

On Iraq, the ayatollah said his country's role has been restricted to "strengthening the foundations of stability and security there." He stressed a need for unity and independence, and for foreign troop withdrawals "as soon as possible."
