CALABAR, Nigeria, April 3 (UPI) -- Nigerian investigators looking into power sector contracts plan to question former President Olusegun Obasanjo, officials said.
The Nigerian House of Representatives Committee on Power and Steel also intends to question former Senate President, Chief Ken Nnamani; former Speaker, Alhaji Bello Masari; and former Vice President Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, Leadership reported Thursday.
The committee reportedly said it would ask the former officials to elaborate on their positions when funding was allocated for the power and steel division in the previous administration.
Obasanjo and his energy minister are accused of awarding some $2.2 billion in no-bid government energy contracts. A witness testified before the committee that one of the companies awarded a contract had less than $200 of base capital at the time, the BBC reported in March.
The committee is investigating why the country's $16 billion of investment in its energy sector during Obasanjo's eight years in power has failed to end power shortages in the African nation.
One contract was given to a firm headed by Abubakar, the report said.
