Oklahoma 2-year-old dies in flood

PEGGS, Okla., April 2 (UPI) -- An Oklahoma family is mourning the death of a 2-year-old girl who drowned when flood waters pulled her from her mother's arms, authorities said.

A funeral will be held Friday for Mackinsey Beck of Peggs, who drowned Monday evening while her mother, Heather L. Alverson, 22, was carrying her on her shoulders as they crossed Spring Creek, The Oklahoman in Oklahoma City reported. They were fleeing their flooded home when Alverson slipped and her daughter was swept away, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol said.

Searchers found the child's body about 8:30 a.m. Tuesday about a mile away, the newspaper reported.

"We believe this was just a horrific accident and believe the mother thought she was doing the right thing for herself and baby. She had the baby's interest in mind," Highway Patrol trooper Betsy Randolph told The Oklahoman.
