WASHINGTON, April 2 (UPI) -- The wife of former U.S. Democratic presidential hopeful John Edwards says presumptive GOP nominee John McCain wouldn't be covered under his healthcare plan.
Elizabeth Edwards says as cancer survivors both she and McCain, R-Ariz., would find themselves "outside the clinic doors," with McCain's proposal, CNN reported Wednesday.
McCain has been successfully treated for melanoma while Edwards has breast cancer.
In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, McCain adviser Douglas Holtz-Eakin said Edwards' remarks indicate she doesn't understand the McCain plan.
Holtz-Eakin told CNN the best way to see that all Americans can afford health insurance is to allow market competition to lower the cost.
Edwards says the plan advocated by Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., is closest to the universal healthcare proposal by her husband, John.
