Minn. duck killer gets community service

ST. PAUL, Minn., March 27 (UPI) -- A man was sentenced to community service at a homeless shelter for the grisly killing of a duck in a Minnesota hotel lobby.

A drunken Scott Clark, 26, had told horrified onlookers at the downtown St. Paul hotel that he was hungry and then proceeded to tear the head off the bird.

Ramsey County Judge Margaret Marrian said she wanted Clark to get a first hand look at genuinely hungry people and at how alcohol abuse can ruin lives, the St. Paul Pioneer-Press reported Thursday.

Clark's lawyer argued for leniency, saying the former Denver resident had been fired from his job and pilloried by public opinion since the incident last fall.

Clark, who pleaded guilty in January to a charge of animal cruelty, told the court, "I don't know why I did what I did, but I take full responsibility."
