Canada arrests 29 in Mohawk drug sweeps

MONTREAL, March 26 (UPI) -- Some 300 Canadian police officers swept three Mohawk Indian reservations Wednesday and arrested 29 people, police in Montreal said.

The drug sweep was a joint effort by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, the Surete du Quebec provincial police force, Ontario Provincial Police, and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, The Gazette newspaper in Montreal reported.

The 15 simultaneous raids were in Montreal, and the reservations at Kahnawake, Kanesatake, and Akwesasne, which straddles Quebec, Ontario and New York state, CTV News reported.

Police seized 250 pounds of marijuana, two AK-47 rifles, two M-16s, three grenade launchers, and $2 million in cash. Officers allege marijuana was being shipped to New York from Kanasetake through the Akwesasne reservation, The Gazette said.

The majority of charges against the accused are conspiracy, drug trafficking and gangsterism, CTV said.
