Russian military chief tenders resignation

MOSCOW, March 25 (UPI) -- The head of the Russian military said he tendered his resignation following a row with the defense minister over the restructuring of the armed forces.

Gen. Yury Baluyevsky, who issued his resignation to Russian President Vladimir Putin on at least one other occasion, offered his resignation shortly after Putin chose to keep him on until 2011, The Moscow Times reported Tuesday.

The Times references local media reports Monday saying "many" other military officials, including Gen. Vasily Smirnov, who heads the recruitment division of the Russian military, planned to resign over disputes regarding armed forces personnel and other reforms.

The row involves plans of Russian Defense Minister Anatoly Serdyukov regarding the sale of redundant military assets, the relocation of navy headquarters from Moscow to St. Petersburg and a 40 percent reduction in staff.
