Ex-San Fran supervisor's trial date set

SAN FRANCISCO, March 22 (UPI) -- Former San Francisco supervisor Ed Jew will go on trial in federal court in July on corruption charges following a judge's ruling this week.

After rejecting a motion by Jew's attorneys regarding the investigation into his activities, U.S. District Judge Susan Illston ruled Jew's trial will begin July 7, the San Francisco Chronicle reported Saturday.

Jew's attorneys had alleged that by contacting the FBI about Jew's alleged illegal activities, one of the Jew's former attorneys potentially violated conflict-of-interest laws.

Illston denied that motion and now Jew will face one count of extortion, a bribery charge and a charge of mail fraud.

Jew has been accused of soliciting city business owners for $84,000 in bribes, the Chronicle reported.

He also will face nine state felony charges in relation to those alleged actions. A trial date for those state charges has yet to be set.

The newspaper said Jew was able to avoid city administrative action and a civil suit by resigning as part of an agreement with San Francisco City Attorney Dennis Herrera.
