Chile: Ex-police convicted of killings

SANTIAGO, Chile, March 20 (UPI) -- Two dozen former Chilean police officers were convicted on human rights charges for the 1973 killings of 30 political detainees, La Nacion reported Thursday.

Among the convicted, only former police Col. Adrian Fernandez, 66, received a life sentence for the killings, which took place just days after the start of the overthrow of Chile's leftist government, orchestrated by Gen. Augusto Pinochet.

Chile remained under Pinochet's control until 1990. Some 3,000 were killed or disappeared during his rein.

The other men convicted Wednesday were sentenced to up to 20 years, judiciary officials said.
