Jailed man gets five more life sentences

VANCOUVER, British Columbia, March 19 (UPI) -- A convicted double-murderer in Vancouver must serve five more life terms related to the 2004 shooting incident, a British Columbia judge ruled.

A dispute outside a Vancouver nightclub in January 2004 left a young man and woman dead of gunshot wounds and five others wounded, The Province, a Vancouver newspaper, reported. In July 2006, 26-year-old Imram Saff Sharif was found guilty by a jury of two counts of first-degree murder and five counts of attempted murder, although the judge sentenced Sharif only on the murder charges.

British Columbia Supreme Court Justice Robert Edwards ordered the mandatory life sentence with no parole eligibility for 25 years but he died before completing sentencing, the newspaper said.

Tuesday, British Columbia Supreme Court Associate Chief Justice Patrick Dohm noted how the five people shot were too traumatized to provide victim impact statements and handed down the life sentences.

"It appears to me that the accused was the only person who was armed and the only person shooting," Dohm said. "There is no doubt the accused intended to kill the five persons in the counts I am dealing with."
