LOS ANGELES, March 15 (UPI) -- Washington's Department of Corrections owes $2.25 million to five children affected when a parolee began shooting at a Los Angeles Jewish community center.
Buford Furrow Jr., 46, a self-affirmed white supremacist, is serving a life prison sentence after he pleaded guilty in 2001 to the 1999 North Valley Jewish Community Center shootings, the Los Angeles Times reported Saturday.
A court found the Department of Corrections was responsible for failing to properly supervise the gunman before the shooting.
Ben Kadish, Joshua Kadish, Joshua Stepakoff, James Zidell and Nathan Powers, who all filed suit as victims either traumatized or wounded from the incident, were less than 10-years-old at the time of the shooting.
Furrow surrendered to police in Las Vegas the day after the shooting and told officers his actions were "wake-up call to America to kill Jews."
