LOS ANGELES, March 9 (UPI) -- A Los Angeles man died Sunday after the homemade soapbox he was riding in a race spun out of control and crashed into a parked car.
Michael Joseph Garcia, 22, was driving his soapbox down a hill in the San Fernando Valley when he lost control and hit a parked sport utility vehicle, the Los Angeles Daily News reported.
Garcia was one of 36 racers taking part in an event put on by the San Fernando Valley Illegal Soapbox Federation. The hill is a popular spot for the sport because the soapboxes can get going up to 60 mph, said Los Angeles Police Detective Bill Bustos.
Garcia was reportedly wearing a helmet, but it flew off on impact, the newspaper reported.
Paramedics transported Garcia to Encino-Tarzana Regional Medical Center, where he died.
