Sri Lanka military claims 17 rebels killed

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka, March 8 (UPI) -- Seventeen Tamil Tiger rebels died and four soldiers were injured in fighting with government troops in northern Sri Lanka, government officials said Saturday.

The government also said one soldier died and two were injured when a mine exploded near an Army tractor in Buttala in the country's southern region, Colombo Page reported.

Fighting has intensified in the north recently as the military has increased its efforts to wipe out the rebel fighters.
