China working toward new legal system

BEIJING, March 8 (UPI) -- Top Chinese legislator Wu Bangguo said Saturday the government is working toward creating a socialist legal system with Chinese characteristics.

The chairman of the Standing Committee of the 10th National People's Congress said the new legal system would have laws governing nearly every aspect of life in China, the state-run Xinhua news agency reported Saturday.

To help create the basics of the system which will govern economic, social, cultural and political activities, the Standing Committee worked with a number of Chinese leaders.

Currently, China has 229 total laws in place in the realm of constitutional and related laws, non-litigation procedure laws, civil and commercial laws, administrative laws, social laws, economic laws, litigation and criminal laws.

The committee's term started five years ago and since that time has forged several key legislative items, including China's anti-secession law and a constitutional amendment, Xinhua said.
