Hospital thief steals rings from patient

VANCOUVER, British Columbia, March 5 (UPI) -- Police in Vancouver, British Columbia, are seeking public help in identifying a man who robbed a 91-year-old hospitalized woman of her heirloom rings.

At a news conference, Constable Tim Fanning showed security video of the suspect who robbed Agnes Ulmer as she lay in bed recovering from having her leg amputated, The Globe and Mail newspaper reported.

"This is such a despicable crime. We had to bring this to everyone's attention," Fanning said. "The value is priceless when it comes to these rings because they're family heirlooms."

Ulmer told police the man came into her room and told her he was going to clean her rings as he slid them off her fingers. One was her wedding band, while the other two had belonged to her mother and great-grandmother, the report said.

Leo Knight, chief executive officer for Paladin Security, which provides security at Vancouver General Hospital said the fact the man's face wasn't clear in any of the video recordings was noteworthy.

"It shows a professional thief. He knows where the cameras are positioned and he wears the hat and keeps his head down," Knight told The Globe and Mail.
