Violence in Sri Lanka leaves 25 dead

VAUNIYA, Sri Lanka, March 2 (UPI) -- Fighting in Sri Lanka left at least 25 people dead Sunday as the military and Tiger rebels clashed, military officials said.

Officials told the Colombo Page that separatist rebels killed a soldier in Vauniya with a Claymore mine, while fighting in northern Sri Lanka left 22 Tiger rebels and three soldiers dead.

Hours after the soldier was killed in Vauniya, an anti-personnel mine detonated, injuring 10 people, including two police officers, the newspaper reported.

A day earlier, five rebels were killed in separate incidents in Muhamalai and Nagarkovil areas.
