Envoy: Ugandan peace talks progressing

KAMPALA, Uganda, Feb. 23 (UPI) -- Peace talks between the Ugandan government and rebel forces are moving toward a possible end to their lengthy conflict, a United Nations envoy said Saturday.

The U.N. secretary-general's special envoy for areas affected by the Lord's Resistance Army rebels said negotiations for a comprehensive peace accord were progressing, the U.N. News Service reported.

The government of Southern Sudan is serving as a mediator for the ongoing peace talks, which have already resulted in a protocol for northern Uganda.

That protocol, which both sides have already signed, reportedly details potential recovery, rehabilitation and development efforts in the troubled region.

U.N. representative Farhan Haq told the news service Saturday a tentative agreement on a cease-fire in Uganda could fall into place within a few days.

Rebel forces have been fighting with the Ugandan government since the mid-1980s with only a 2006 cease-fire offering a temporary respite from regional violence.
