Calif. 8th-grader dies day after shooting

OXNARD, Calif., Feb. 13 (UPI) -- An eighth-grade California boy died Wednesday, a day after being shot by a classmate during English class in a computer lab at their school, authorities said.

Ventura County Chief Deputy Medical Examiner James Baroni said Lawrence King, 15, was pronounced brain dead at 2 p.m. at St. John's Regional Medical Center in Oxnard, the Ventura County Star reported.

King was fatally wounded about 8:30 a.m. Tuesday at E.O. Green School in Oxnard, the newspaper said.

The youth who shot King left the room, which held about two dozen students at the time, but was arrested soon after several blocks away.

The Star said other students who were in the classroom when the shooting took place identified the shooter as Brandon McInerney, 14. One student said McInerney shot King twice, once in the back of the head and once in the back. Authorities had not identified the suspected shooter.

Oxnard police said it appeared the victim and shooter had some sort of personal animosity between them but were not specific.
