KABUL, Afghanistan, Feb. 11 (UPI) -- A roadside bomb explosion Monday in Afghanistan barely missed a Canadian convoy of vehicles but disrupted a meeting of village elders and coalition forces.

The incident occurred near Shahwali Kot village, 15 miles north of Kandahar, Canwest News Service reported.

The report said the Canadian convoy was transporting soldiers and civilians to the meeting that was also attended by tribal leaders and local dignitaries including Kandahar Gov. Asadullah Khalid. It had been called to discuss security and development issues in the region.

Khalid's office reportedly claimed the attack was an apparent assassination attempt against the governor.

The device, triggered by remote control, went off just seconds after the last Canadian vehicle had crossed a culvert.

There were reports three local civilians were injured in the incident. Afghan police arrested four local men in the bombing incident.

The report said the Canadian soldiers were building a large forward operating base south of the village.
