Dad suspected of throwing toddler in river

BALTIMORE, Feb. 6 (UPI) -- A Baltimore man hospitalized after a suicide attempt is likely to be charged with killing his 3-year-old son by throwing him off a bridge, a report said.

Turner Jordan Nelson was still missing Wednesday after an intensive search of the Patapsco River. His grandmother made several calls to 911 Sunday night to say that she believed his father, Stephen Nelson, had thrown him from the Francis Scott Key Bridge, the Baltimore Sun reported.

Nelson remained hospitalized and unconscious. He drank household chemicals Sunday night, officials said.

Natisha Johnson, Turner's mother, described Nelson as a "good family man" and said she could not imagine him harming his son. But she said that he threatened to throw the boy into the river when he picked him up on Sunday.

"I'm still hoping for the best, still praying that this is a nightmare and that he did not do what he actually said he did and that he just took my son somewhere else," Johnson said.

Johnson and Turner had been involved in a lengthy court fight over custody.
