Suspect in journalist rape, killing held

ST. LOUIS, Feb. 4 (UPI) -- A man accused of the rape and murder of a retired journalist appeared in St. Louis, Mo., County Court Monday to hear there would be no bail in his case.

Wearing handcuffs and sporting a black eye, Brian M. Walters, 27, appeared before Judge Ellen Levy Siwak in the murder case of Nancy Miller, 59, the St. Louis Post Dispatch reported.

Walters was charged Sunday with first-degree murder, rape, armed criminal action and burglary, just 10 days after being released from prison on parole.

The purpose of the hearing was to read to the defendant the charges against him. Walters, Familiar with the justice system after his prior conviction in St. Louis County and prison sentence for burglary, either mumbled that he understood the charge or nodded.

Siwak set Walters' next court appearance for Feb. 19.
