SAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 30 (UPI) -- Officials postponed the investigation into a fatal tiger attack at the San Francisco Zoo pending new evidence, police officials said.

A statement from the San Francisco Police Department said the investigation is on hold "pending new witnesses being interviewed and/or new evidence" emerging, the San Francisco Chronicle said Wednesday.

A Siberian tiger breached its enclosure Christmas Day mauling to death 17-year-old Carlos Sousa Jr.

Police searched the car and cell phones of two others who survived the attack while investigating allegations that brothers Paul and Kulbir Dhaliwal taunted the tiger prior to its escape.

Paul Dhaliwal allegedly confessed to the taunting to his father. He denied throwing items into the tiger's habitat and police were unable to produce any evidence, however, the Chronicle said.

Zoo officials said they believe "something highly unusual happened" and said they would "continue (their) investigation to determine what happened on that day."
