Rep. Davis will not seek re-election

WASHINGTON, Jan. 30 (UPI) -- Rep. Tom Davis, R-Va., saying it was time for a break from public life, announced Wednesday he would not seek re-election this year.

"I have decided the time is right to take a sabbatical from public life," Davis said in a statement released in Washington. "I will serve out the remainder of my term, and plan to remain an active contributor to Republican causes, but will not run for office in 2008."

Davis said he hasn't decided what he will do once he leaves Congress, and wouldn't rule out leaving the public sector.

"I want to emphasize that I am not closing the door on future public service, but after 29 years in office, winning 11 elections, I think it is time for a respite," he said.
